Season 2 ~ Who put the squirrels in charge‽
After its wildly successful “mockmentary” pilot season, the curious (and slightly chaotic) crew of ground squirrels are now in charge of the forest’s favourite television station. Comedy, science and retro vibes are still at the heart of the show, but the species and environment are adapting to new climate realities.
Equal parts silly and sincere, Northern Tails is original edutainment created in the Yukon, Canada – to be shared around the world.

EPISODE 1 | Spring has sprung, but only Scout and Eleanor are up and at ‘em. While the guys on the crew hit the hibernation snooze button (curses climate change!!!), the girls launch their new TV station. Michael Jay chats with boreal critters who survive winter in wildly different ways.
EPISODE 2 | A beloved member of the film crew gets abducted by an eagle and Scout rallies her team for a rescue mission. The squirrels brace themselves for danger in the squishy, spooky wetlands, but when they stumble upon a bedazzling bog they’re awestruck.
EPISODE 3 | Isabelle launches a summer travel vlog to capture her annual migration to the high alpine. At the same time, the channel releases a new cooking roadshow hosted by an outrageous mosquito duo who share their favourite forest “pairings”.
EPISODE 4 | Winston wants a girlfriend and Scout creates a makeover show starring a cast of gurus to help him attract a mate. Isabelle, Lou, Bruno and Klaus school him on their species courtship rituals and then, Jackie reminds him to be just himself.
Episode 5 | Scout lands a contract to make an instructional video to help bears stay safe from people. To research human behaviour, they send Brian the bear undercover into an office – the most befuddling habitat of all. The video is a surprise viral hit that teaches bears – and humans – how they can share the boreal with respect for each other.
Episode 6 | There’s a mystery looming in the boreal — water is disappearing. Detective Wolf is on the case, sniffing out some muddy clues and shadowy characters. He gets a tip from a fox with connections in “humantown”. It seems that human activity has been meddling with the ecosystem and reshaping the land. Can a lone wolf make a difference?
Wilderness What’s What?
The Boreal Broadcasting Company and Northern Tails TV Wildlife Service are proud to present Wilderness What’s What. It's a regular segment of short vignettes that strives to stoke interest and understanding about the magnificent wildlife species that roam, soar and swim in Canada’s hinterlands. It’s hosted by Maurice the Moose and our famous trio of geese, Mary, Marie and Mark.
WINTER | Winter lasts about 6 months up here in the boreal forest and temperatures can dip below minus 40 degrees. So how the heck do species survive? Turns out they all have BIOLOGICAL TRICKS – adapt, migrate or hibernate.
WETLANDS | The boreal holds more surface freshwater than any other ecosystem in the world – including the Amazon! Bogs, fens, swamps, ponds, rivers, marshes and lakes cover more than two-thirds of the area.
MOSQUITOES | The boreal is a hotbed for bugs. With warming global temperatures, mosquitoes hatch earlier, grow larger and live longer – and that puts some animals at risk. But mozzies aren’t all bad news. They’re a key food source for birds, fish, and other insects, helping nature keep its balance.
MATING / Courtship rituals are an art and science for creatures in the boreal forest. From showmanship (caribou) 💪 and signature scents (beavers) 🦫, to dancing (grouse) 🕺, love songs (wolves) 🐺, acrobatics (ravens) 🐦⬛ and playing it cool (wolverines) 😎, nature is IMPRESSIVE!
BEARS | Bears are shy by nature and usually avoid confrontation, but with climate change and human activity affecting their habitats and biological behaviours, close encounters are more common — and that’s dangerous for everyone. Respect the bear bubble and there won’t be trouble!
RIPPLE EFFECTS | A trophic cascade is an ecological process where adding, removing, or changing top predators triggers a ripple effect across the food chain, altering plant and animal populations and overall ecosystem health.
